The recently released film “Icebreaker” (directed by Nikolai Khomeriki) is based on the events that occurred in 1985 - the drift of the scientific expedition vessel “Mikhail Somov” in Antarctica and the rescue expedition on the icebreaker “Vladivostok”. This story became the last Soviet heroic epic to unfold in high latitudes. It was widely covered in the press of those years, most of its participants received various awards. But soon times changed, the USSR collapsed, Antarctic research was carried out with great difficulty for many years, and the epic of “Mikhail Somov” was practically forgotten. Meanwhile, many of its participants are still alive, “Mikhail Somov”, who has “exchanged” his fifties, also works in the Arctic. We want to tell our readers about his story (which included other, albeit less noticeable, heroic and dramatic events).
