The name of the Canadian writer and economist Stephen Leacock (1869–1944) is firmly entrenched in the history of Canadian and world literature. Leacock gained wide popularity as a lively and witty storyteller, a wonderful master of comic situations and characters, acutely aware of the contradictions of life. Leacock published over thirty collections of humorous essays and stories, as well as a number of theoretical works devoted to the problems of humor in literature. The most popular were his collections such as “A Test of the Pen”, “Topsy-Turvy Novels”, as well as works “The Theory and Technique of Humor”, “Humor and Humanity. An Introduction to the Study of Humor." As the author said: “Many of my friends believe that I write humorous trinkets in moments of leisure, when my tired brain is not able to think about such serious matters as economics.”
