Valerio Evangelisti was born in 1952 in Bologna. He is perhaps the most famous Italian author in the field of science fiction and fantasy. After many years of historical research at the University of Bologna, where he still lives, he received the Urania Prize in 1994 for his novel Nicholas Eymerich, Inquisitor. The figure of Nicholas Eymerich, an inquisitor of the 14th century, as intelligent as he was cruel, exploring phenomena that will find their explanation only in the distant future, caused such a strong response among readers that Valerio Evangelisti decided to expand the first novel into a series in which today there are seven volumes. The first volumes of the cycle about Eymerich have already been published in French, German and Spanish, Portuguese, Brazilian and English editions are being prepared. In 1999, Evangelisti wrote the trilogy “Magus - Il romanzo di Nostradamus” (published in 2000 and 2001 in Germany under the titles “Nostradamus - Prediction”, “Betrayal” and “Gloomy Testament”), which became a bestseller and has already been published in twelve countries. Meanwhile, the cycle about Eymerich continues to cut new circles. Valerio Evangelisti himself wrote a dramatization for Italian radio - three seasons of 30 episodes, and this dramatization received the Prix Italia award for best radio play in 2000. The story of the Inquisitor was inspired by the lyrical drama "Tanit", as well as several music albums and individual songs, mainly in the Heavy Metal style. In France and Italy, you can buy comic book albums based on the Eymerich series, artists from all over the world have drawn inspiration from this series for paintings or drawings, and film projects on this topic are currently being prepared in Italy and France. Along with other awards Valerio Evangelisti received the French Grand Imagination Prize in 1998, the Eiffel Tower Society Prize in 1999, and the Europa Prize at the Science Fiction Eurocon in Prague in 2002. Valerio Evangelisti writes for numerous magazines and newspapers around the world and is himself the publisher of the Italian magazine Carmilla, which is dedicated to political issues and fantasy literature. One of his latest books is a collection of articles and essays on popular literature.
...Have not all attempts to “handle the world” suffered terrible failure? Are all these voices from the sky only summoning new, even more terrible demons? Valerio Evangelisti has something to tell us about this. (A. Eschbach)
