Doris Lessing received the Nobel Prize in Literature with the wording: "Talking about the experiences of women who examined a divided civilization with skepticism, passion and visionary power." It is about the experience of women and about civilization that puts up barriers to the natural principle that will be discussed in the book “Grandmothers”. These are four stories, each of which is different from the previous one. The novella, which gives the title to the whole book, is perhaps the most vivid, sincere, and unusual. What should a woman who loves her friend’s son do? Nature dictates that she must surrender to the feeling that she will never be as happy as in the arms of this young man. But prudence forces her to give up love. Some will see in this story an archetypal beginning, the myth of Oedipus, others - the struggle between nature and society, others - the tragedy of middle-aged women trying to grab their share of happiness. But be that as it may, “Grandmothers,” like the other three works that make up the collection, will not leave anyone indifferent. The short story was filmed - in 2013, the film “Two Mothers” directed by Anne Fontaine was released, which was called “Secret Attraction” in the Russian box office ".
