Group Yankee is a speculative fiction novel written by American Army Major Harold Coyle in 1987. The novel is a spin-off to Sir John Hackett's novel "World War III: August 1985" and tells about the actions of an American tank company in the conditions of the war described by Hackett. The novel focuses on the actions of an American tank company in West Germany in the conditions of the Third World War between the Soviet Union and USA. Most place names and all divisions described in the novel are fictitious. While Hackett focuses on political events and decisions at the highest echelons of military command, Coyle's novel focuses on the actions of a "group"—a company-level unit of the United States Army. To a lesser extent, the novel is devoted to the theme of people's reactions to preparations for war and the trial of combat. It should be noted that from Hackett’s novels only the time of action is taken - August and the end of the conflict with the exchange of nuclear strikes on Birmingham and Minsk. The novel is dedicated to the actions of the American heavy tank group "Yankee". Initially, the Yankee group was Company D of the 1st Battalion of the 4th Tank Regiment of the US Army, part of the 2nd Brigade of the 25th Armored Division of the 10th Corps of the US Army. In wartime conditions, American battalions of one brigades can be reorganized into Task Forces to optimize their composition. For this purpose, Company "D" was transferred to the 1st Battalion, 78th Infantry Regiment of the same brigade, in exchange for its Company "A". Due to transfer to another battalion, "D" Company changed its index to "Y", or, in the NATO phonetic alphabet, "Yankee". In turn, companies can be reorganized into Groups by exchanging platoons. Yankee Company transfers the 1st Tank Platoon to B Company of the 1st 78th in exchange for its motorized rifle platoon, after which both companies become known as "Yankee Group" and "Bravo Group". Thus, "Yankee Company" Yankee" consists of a headquarters section (M1 Abrams tanks of the commander (66th) and senior assistant (55th), 2nd and 3rd tank platoons (tanks 21, 22, 23, 24 and 31, 32, 33, 34), as well as a mechanized platoon (5 M-113 armored personnel carriers). The infantry is armed with 4 Dragon anti-tank missile systems, M72 LAW grenade launchers, and M60 machine guns. At the beginning of the war, the group was assigned two M901 ATGM vehicles, but they were quickly deployed. were disabled.
