Little is known about Russian Freemasonry. But it was a spiritual movement that had a significant impact on the cultural and social life of the Russian nobility. The basic ideas of Freemasonry are introduced by two small works by Ivan Vladimirovich Lopukhin (1756–1816), a prominent representative of the Moscow Masonic circle, which have long become a bibliographic rarity. The first of them provides a description of the Masonic ritual practiced in the “Shining Star” lodge, the master of which was Lopukhin, the other is a statement of the provisions of the Masonic doctrine and the spiritual search that was characteristic of a significant part of the then Freemasonry.
