The Song era in China (10th–13th centuries) was marked by the flourishing of popular folk literature, in which the short story genre occupied a central place. The stories of the Song era remain unsurpassed examples of oral folk art. They served as the basis for the further development of written literature - not only many later stories, but also novels go back to them.
