The Grand Duke of Kiev Svyatoslav was the son of Igor Rurikovich and the Varangian daughter Olga. During his short life, Svyatoslav committed so many acts that the historian N.M. Karamzin called him “Alexander the Great of our ancient history.” A successful commander, a cunning diplomat, an ambitious ruler, Svyatoslav earned hatred and admiration from his enemies, creating for the first time in history a powerful Russian state, which all of Europe and even the Second Rome - Byzantium - had to reckon with.
