During the Great Depression, Kentucky established a horse-drawn library service. The goal of the project was to create new jobs and increase literacy of the population. The horsewomen who delivered books to the most inaccessible corners of this wild land were called book ladies. Mary Cussy Carter is one of these book ladies. In any weather, she fearlessly travels mile after mile to deliver books to her readers.
