The novel by Jerome Ferrari won the Prix Goncourt in 2012 and was published in 250 thousand copies. Its title is an allusion to St. Augustine’s “Tale of the Ruin of the City of Rome.” The fall of the mighty Roman Empire is an allegory of human life: the one who is happy today is not immune from the fact that tomorrow it will remain on the ruins of its former prosperity. Despite the apparent simplicity of the story that became the basis of the plot, this philosophical novel refers us to many literary sources and requires thoughtful, leisurely reading.
