“Pocket battleships” - these original ships created by German engineers in the interwar period remained in history under this nickname. Having found a loophole in the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, the Germans officially classified them as battleships, although in reality they were more like heavy cruisers. Armed with very powerful main-caliber artillery and equipped with an unusual diesel propulsion system, the Deutschland class ships were considered one of the Kriegsmarine's main trump cards in World War II. Thanks to their enormous cruising range, they were ideally suited to the role of ocean raiders and became a real “bone in the throat” for the Lords of the Admiralty. Therefore, the hunt for “pocket battleships” was one of the main tasks of the British fleet throughout the war...
