In the 60s of the twentieth century, NASA discovered an extraterrestrial spacecraft hiding in the asteroid belt. They observed the Target for several decades, feverishly improving technology to reach the ship and study it. All this time the ship drifted silently in space. Dr. Jane Holloway is a linguist specializing in endangered languages. She never thought of becoming an astronaut. But when NASA invites her to join the expedition to Target, Jane cannot refuse.
