The book “Beluga whale - Sumeru of Asia” was prepared on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the first ascent to the highest peak of the Altai-Sayan mountainous country. Belukha enjoys a well-deserved reputation as one of the most beautiful mountains on earth, and every year it becomes the object of all kinds of expeditions, climbs, and in recent years, commercial tours. The star-shaped nature of the glaciation of the mountain range, located on the border of Russia and Kazakhstan, represents a wonderful object for observing changes in the natural environment of the mountains in the center of the vast Asian continent. There are many legends associated with the peak, and its undoubted charm inspires poets and artists to express their own vision of the Mountain, reputed to be a place of power of the cosmic order. The book uses materials from expeditionary research of different years, a description of the routes to the summit according to the book “Belukha”, photographs, and many posted on the Internet. The book is intended for a wide range of readers, everyone who is interested in the history and nature of the Altai mountains. The author is grateful to the staff of the Altai Regional Museum of Local Lore, the regional library, and the scientific library of Tomsk University for the opportunity to get acquainted with publications of old about Belukha, which have become a bibliographic rarity. The book was published in funds from a grant from the Governor of the Altai Territory, established within the framework of the target program “Youth of Altai for 2014-2016.”
