The novel by D. S. Merezhkovsky (1865-1941) “The Resurrected Gods of Leonardo da Vinci” is part of the trilogy “Christ and Antichrist,” which was widely known at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. Being originally connected by the author’s through-thought about the movement of history as a struggle between the religion of the spirit and the religion of the flesh with the novels “The Death of the Gods. Julian the Apostate" (1895) and "Antichrist, Peter and Alexei" (1904), this novel retains semantic independence and completeness of plot, being a vivid historical narrative about the life and work of the great Italian humanist of the Renaissance Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519).Leonardo da Vinci is one of the most mysterious geniuses of the Renaissance. The creator of undeniable masterpieces, an inspired artist, he suddenly lost interest in art, leaving his paintings unfinished. His drawings depict with equal perfection both the beauty of man and the world, and the ugly, cruel scenes of existence. He owned a wide variety of inventions that were far ahead of his time and remain important to this day. The personal life of this man is mysterious, he encrypted his feelings in the same way as he encrypted his works, writing them down in “mirror writing.” He had devoted students and bitter rivals, including Raphael and Michelangelo. He spoke with common people and with all-powerful sovereigns. They all passed before the attentive and cold gaze of Leonardo. His time remains in his works, but he himself still excites our imagination not only with what he left, but also with what he took with him...
