In the very name of Nikolai Miklouho-Maclay one can hear the echo of distant wanderings, the voice of fate sounds, sending the descendant of Ukrainian Cossacks and German doctors to distant New Guinea, whose inhabitants still remember the Russian “man from the moon”. Having been the first scientist to visit the hard-to-reach areas of Oceania and Southeast Asia, Miklouho-Maclay selflessly, sometimes at the risk of his life, studied their nature and population. His research has not only scientific value - during the era of colonial conquests, he tirelessly called for seeing “savages” as people and preserving their original culture. Many books published in Russia and abroad are devoted to the “White Papuan”, but many aspects of his biography still remain unclear. The new biography of Miklouho-Maclay, created by the famous ethnographer Daniil Tumarkin, is the result of many years of research, covering in detail the short but bright life of the outstanding humanist scientist.
