B. Malinowski (1884–1942) was an English ethnographer and sociologist of Polish origin, one of the founders and leaders of the functional school in English social anthropology. In the present work, Malinowski focuses on the ethnographic activities of the Trobriand islanders; but with his characteristic breadth of views and subtlety of perception he tries to show that the exchange of values between the inhabitants of the Trobriand and other islands is in no way a purely commercial activity; it shows that exchange satisfies emotional and aesthetic needs. This allows him to criticize the concept of “economic man.” Characteristic of Malinovsky’s method is that it fully takes into account the complexity of human nature. He sees man as multidimensional and reveals both the emotional and rational basis of human activity. The most vivid impression on the reader will be made by the study of the influence of magic on the entire life and thinking of the Trobriand islanders.
