This is not just another book of memories and documents about the GULAG. NORILSK UPRISING: driven to despair by inhuman living conditions, exhausting labor, sadistic bullying and deadly reprisals by the camp authorities, prisoners of GORLAG, the Norilsk special camp for “especially dangerous criminals”, rebelled and demanded not only a softening of the camp regime, but also put forward political demands regarding the democratization of the Soviet regime as a whole. The uprising, of course, was suppressed, but the courage and self-sacrifice of its ordinary participants and organizers (the author was among the latter) showed that human dignity cannot be defeated. It is stronger than torture and death itself.
