This Turkified Mongol reigned for thirty-five years (1370–1405) and, being in Samarkand, tirelessly and always successfully waged wars in the space from Delhi to the Aegean Sea, from Damascus to Chinese Turkestan. Tamerlane is not just a name, but a whole myth that has reached our time. This lame man with a crippled arm had remarkable energy and extraordinary endurance. He could not stand stories about the horrors of war and at the same time did not prevent the spread of rumors about the countless murders he had committed. A destroyer of ancient cities, he built luxurious buildings in his capital, laying the foundation of the Timurid Renaissance, one of the pearls of Muslim civilization. Tamerlane’s horseback campaigns ended an entire era, during which horsemen armed with bows established their order throughout Eurasia.
