"Virgil, no!" is the last novel by radical feminist Monique Wittig (1935-2003). Scenes from The Divine Comedy take place in San Francisco at the end of the 20th century, where Hell, Purgatory and Heaven coexist. Women enslaved by men endure unbearable torment in Hell, and only free lesbian love gives them hope of deliverance from suffering. In her novels and philosophical essays, Wittig called for rebellion against men whom she considered sadistic occupiers. The writer argued that the rebellion would be successful if it was possible to destroy the main weapon of men - the language of heterosexual society.
