St. Philotheus Kokkin, Patriarch of Constantinople in the 14th century (1354–1355 and 1362–1376), is known to us for blessing St. Sergius of Radonezh as abbess in the Trinity-Sergius Lavra he created and became the author of the life of St. Gregory Palamas. This publication gives the story of St. Philotheus about the amazing life, exploits and virtues of St. Savva the New, or Vatopedi, is a saint who lived in the 13th–14th centuries and labored in various holy places of Byzantium, and above all on Holy Mount Athos. This life of the saint is a bright page of late Byzantine holiness, which in this year of the 1000th anniversary of Russian Athos evokes among our compatriots an increased interest in the enduring spiritual heritage of the Holy Mountain.
