A sniper is a specially trained soldier with perfect command of his weapon, who is involved in solving fire missions at distances and in conditions that require special skills and a high level of individual shooting training. The first sniper units appeared in the 18th century, during the American War of Independence, but the First World War became a real paradise for snipers. After the start of the Great Patriotic War, the USSR began extensive training of snipers, who began to be trained not only in special schools, but also in courses of OSOAVKHIM, Vsevobuch, as well as directly in the troops. By February 1942, there were 6,000 snipers on the Leningrad Front alone, and in 1943, special sniper battalions were formed within the 29th and 70th armies. New book from the “I Remember” project ( ) is a truthful and sometimes simple-minded story of those soldiers of the Great Patriotic War who can rightfully say: “I was a sniper.”
