This is a novel about true love, strong, not susceptible to any whirlpools of fate, an inimitable epic about the private life and history of the country. Summer of 1918. The First World War is coming to an end when, in a small French town, Leon meets young Louise and falls in love with her. Their beautiful romance could have grown into a long, happy life, but fate decreed otherwise: the lovers come under German shelling and for a long time consider each other dead. Two decades later, they meet by chance in Paris. However, fate separates them again: the German invasion of France (this is already the Second World War), and most importantly, Louise’s refusal to destroy Leon’s marriage lead to another separation of the novel’s heroes. In occupied Paris during the war, Leon fights against the heinous tasks forced upon him by the SS. And Louise, a bank employee sent to Africa with the national gold reserve, confronts the difficulties surrounding her. Despite all the hardships of life, the heroes never forget about their love.
