Ksenia Ernestovna Levashova-Stunkel (1896–1961) studied painting in the studio of Ilya Mashkov and took lessons from Alexander Kuprin. For many years she was friends and corresponded with Vasily Masyutin. But her memoirs cover mainly the private life of a Moscow family and contain valuable material on the history of everyday life at the beginning of the twentieth century: home life, gymnasium, balls, holiday festivities, city life. The Higher Courses for Women, the birth of the Art Theater, and lectures by Ivan Tsvetaev also come into view. Deep self-reflection combined with the spontaneity of experience, the accuracy of historical details and artlessness of writing give the artist’s memoirs a special charm.
