Under the name of Lord Kelvin, the 19th century British scientist William Thomson, one of the creators of experimental physics, went down in history. He is best remembered for his work on classical thermodynamics, especially concerning the introduction of the absolute temperature scale into science. Lord Kelvin contributed to the development of fields such as astrophysics, fluid mechanics and engineering, he was involved in laying the first submarine telegraph cable linking Europe and America, and in scientific and philosophical debates about determining the age of the Earth.
