The book is a comprehensive study of the events associated with the event that shocked all of Italy in 73–71. BC e. uprising led by Spartacus. Based on a wide range of sources, the author analyzes in detail the data of the literary tradition about the uprising from the point of view of the military-political situation of that time. Issues related to the organizational structure, weapons, strategy and tactics of the army of Spartacus, as well as the improvements that he introduced into the Roman military art that he mastered, are considered. In a number of cases, a possible reconstruction of the course of battles and a critical assessment of the forces of the warring parties are given. About the author Vladimir Anatolyevich Goroncharovsky was born in 1954 in Leningrad, and graduated from the Faculty of History of Leningrad State University in 1976. In 1985 he defended his candidate's thesis, and in 2005 - his doctoral dissertation on the topic “Military affairs and the military-political history of the Bosporus in the middle of the 1st century. BC e. - mid-3rd century. n. e." He led the excavations of such ancient cities of the Northern Black Sea region as Ilurat and Labrys (Seven Brothers Settlement), as well as the first Russian archaeological expedition on the territory of the Republic of Cyprus, published five monographs and more than 140 scientific and popular science articles on ancient history and archaeology. Currently, he is a leading researcher at the Institute of the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
