“These are human affairs,” said the vampire. “As I've always said, when people are out to kill each other, the easiest thing to do is often to stay away...” Vampire Detective Nick knows several seers. One of those seers, an antisocial guy with an annoying habit of picturing events before they happen, shows up to Nick at work and claims that he has to show him something. This "something" turns out to be his latest creation - a mural depicting a bomb explosion in the center of New York. Unfortunately, by the time Nick sees it, it is already too late. Nick has no clues other than the painting itself, the murdered man and the murdered man's partner a man, a famous local designer and architect, an eccentric vampire named Straven. Soon, what seemed like a simple case of a robbery gone wrong begins to resemble something more sinister, with far more far-reaching consequences. It also brings Nick dangerously close to the life he thought he had left behind - the life of a high-ranking member of the White Death, a vampire criminal underground. When his ex-girlfriend shows up at a trendy vampire club with a new vampire boyfriend, Nick realizes that things really couldn't have gotten any worse.
