Created directly from typesetting without a manuscript, “Bloody Romance” is a literary monument that has no analogues. It can be taken as an example of the automatic writing that the surrealists preached, as a postmodern collage, a parody, a work of typographical art, or simply read as a funny adventure novel.
Published in 1924 in an edition of 17 copies for collectors, "Bloody novel" gained enormous popularity in the early 90s, a quarter of a century after the death of its author, artist and occultist Josef Vahal. The novel was republished many times, was filmed, and connoisseurs call it the best book written in the twentieth century in the Czech language.
