This book is about the fact that people at war are actually alive. They joke stupidly and cry real tears, swim in warm summer lakes and build snowmen near the dugouts, pet cats and scratch dogs, violate all kinds of regulations and quarrel with commanders, clean machine guns and cook borscht, read books and raise chickens, and do much more - a lot of things, except, in fact, the process of war. Because they are truly alive. The author was lucky to meet such people on perhaps the most fascinating, albeit difficult and nervous, journey in life - on the endless road of a field volunteer.
