Successful writer Timothy Underhill arrives from New York to his hometown of Millhaven for the funeral of Nancy, the wife of his younger brother Philip. Nancy committed suicide, and no one can explain the reason for her action. As the case progresses, it turns out that Nancy had ominous visions before her inexplicable death. And Timothy's nephew, fifteen-year-old Mark, became obsessed with the old abandoned house located next door. In the windows of this house and on the street next to it, the boy sees a Black man. Meanwhile, children begin to disappear in the city, and Underhill soon learns of the disappearance of his nephew. Автор майстерно поєднує елементи психологічного трилера та містики, створюючи атмосферу напруги та загадки, яка тримає в напрузі до самого кінця. Сюжет розгортається навколо трагічної смерті Ненсі та зникнення дітей, що змушує читача задуматися про темні сторони людської природи. Особливо вразила динаміка між персонажами, зокрема між Тімоті та його племінником Марком, чия одержимість старим будинком додає ще більше інтриги.
