The continuation of the book “I Fought in a Fighter” consists of interviews with pilots who replaced those killed in the hardest battles of 1941-1942. And although many of them graduated from the school with a total flight time of about 20 hours, they had one significant advantage - the chance to get to an experienced and competent squadron commander, on whose skills the life of a young fighter largely depended. A few of those who came to the front in 1943-1944 became Heroes of the Soviet Union, but it was they, playing the role of wingmen, who ensured the lightning-fast effective attacks of Gulaev, Reshetov, Kozhedub and many other famous aces.
