"Don't sleep - there are snakes all around! Life and language of the Indians of the Amazon jungle" (2008) - Daniel Everett's story about his life among the Piraha Indians in the Amazon jungle. A young linguist and missionary went to Brazil with his whole family to translate the Bible into the Piraha language and convert the Indians to Christianity. The Pirahã do not mark the change of day and night and do not know private property; their language does not have numerals, established color terms, the concepts of “right” and “left” and complex sentences. Communication with the Pirahã, interest in their way of life, culture and language completely changed Everett’s ideas about science and religion. As a result, he, who wanted to lead the Indians to faith, lost faith himself and devoted his life to linguistic research.
