FROM THE PUBLISHER. B. Yehoshua (born 1936 in Jerusalem) is a renowned Israeli novelist, playwright, and essayist. Already his first stories, published in the fifties, made a strong impression with a narrative style close to surrealism, a combination of fantasy and naturalism. Their action develops outside a clear time and spatial framework, the heroes are, as it were, at the mercy of powerful external forces. In the subsequent stories of A. B. Yehoshua, written in the sixties and especially the seventies, in the plays and novel “The Lover,” the problems of modern Israeli society. The writer seeks to reveal the essence of these problems through the internal perception of the characters. Their personal lives and psyches are heavily burdened by the Arab-Israeli conflict, the wars that the Jewish state has to wage, and the fact that Jews in Israel are forced to interfere in the fate of another people. In 1990, A. B. Yehoshua released the multifaceted novel “Mr. Mani", consisting of five dialogues, and in each of them the reader hears the voice of only one interlocutor, and only by his remarks can one guess about the reaction of others. The narrative moves freely from the events of the eighties of our century to the events of the late, mid and early nineteenth centuries, and the geography covers Israel, Central Europe, Crete, Greece, Turkey. "Mr. Money" is the saga of one Jewish family, whose representatives experienced all the vicissitudes of Jewish fate and survived, despite the problems of self-identification that arose in each generation. The novel encourages us to think about the “life of ideas”, about their influence on specific destinies, sometimes fatal. In this work by A. B. Yehoshua, as in his other novels and stories (for example, “Molho”, “Summer 1970”), there is no shortage of philosophical metaphors, symbols and allegories, with the help of which the author persistently tries to attract the attention of readers to eternal questions of human existence.
