In the original version, when Bones leaves Kat after the infamous "piano scene" he goes to New Orleans, after which, in the alternate version, Gregor finds a way to erase Kostya's memory of Kat, just as Mencheres erased Kat's memory of Gregor when she was a teenager. And as you can imagine, erasing Kat from his memory dramatically changed his behavior, and thus the original middle of the novel was very different from the version that was later published. This part starts around chapter 20.
