“The Circle is Closed,” the second part of Jonathan Coe’s famous duology, continues the story begun in “The Rakali Club.” More than twenty years have passed, it’s the 2000s, and former schoolchildren are preoccupied with completely different problems. Now they dress much better, listen to more complex music, and wrinkles have long been more important to them than acne, but their concern about what is happening in the world and about their own place in it has not gone away. They still don't have answers to many questions. But if “The Rakali Club” is a novel about innocence, then the second novel in the duology is about the feeling of guilt that many of us acquire over time. Years and centuries pass, the world changes, but man remains unchanged, with all his vices and virtues. This is what Jonathan Coe's new novel is about, as elegant and superbly constructed as all the previous books of the modern classic.
