The main character of The Graveyard Book is named Bod. This is not a typo: not Bob, but Bod, short for Nobody. The boy received such a rare name from his adoptive parents. The childless Inich couple took the boy under guardianship to protect him from a man named Jack, who killed Bod's real family. Even for our crazy times, the Inichs do not look like an ordinary family. It would be nice if they just lived in the cemetery in their graves, but both spouses died long ago. The cemetery fence does not just enclose the place where the cold ashes lie, it separates the world of the living from the world of the dead. Here, among the pompous tombs and simple gravestones, “unlife” is in full swing: dead children play, a graphomaniac poet who committed suicide poses, in an ancient mound the mysterious Blue Man guards the treasures of his master, and somewhere there is even a passage into the desert with an abandoned city , adapted by spirits for their abode. This is Bod’s new home, which in its exotic unusualness is in no way inferior to Mowgli’s fabulous jungle. The book consists of several short stories from Bod’s life. With each of them, the hero becomes two to three years older. All the sketches are built into a coherent story of inevitable growing up, which sooner or later will lead Bod, like his literary prototype in his time, from the place that has become his current home into the world of ordinary people.
