The second part of the famous writer’s trilogy tells about the difficult days of the fascist occupation in Estonia. The invaders, considering this Baltic republic their ancestral fiefdom, used its population and territory in the interests of “great Germany.” Not all Estonians understood this right away. Due to the criminal methods of the Stalinist clique's policies, many of them greeted the occupiers as liberators. However, very soon, behind the respectable façade of the “new government,” they saw the true face of an inhumane and anti-human administrative entity - a fascist state, whose goals and objectives were polar opposite to the hopes of ordinary Estonians.
