This book is a unique first-hand testimony. This is a frank and cynical account of the most ugly aspects of the war on the Eastern Front by the German Scharfschutze (sniper) - a ruthless professional who was responsible for the lives of 257 Soviet soldiers. In July 1943, the young machine gunner Josef Ollerberg was wounded near Voroshilovsk. In the hospital, he decided to experiment with a Russian sniper rifle that accidentally fell into his hands. A few months later, he returned to his regiment as a trained marksman and changed his military specialty forever. In the days when the Nazis had to continuously retreat under the incessant attacks of the Red Army, Ollerberg became one of the most successful German snipers. Among the few ordinary soldiers of the Wehrmacht, he was awarded such a high award as the Knight's Cross. The man's dark, heartbreaking memories reveal the horrifying cruelty of the war on the Eastern Front, in which there was no place for chivalry or compassion. Ollerberg himself was fully consistent with this war - he was cunning and ruthless, knew how to wait and had an almost animal ability to navigate the battlefield. He survived the most terrible trials, but paid a monstrous price for survival, turning into a complete killer.
