The book of Zhang Zhenzi gives us the opportunity to become more familiar with the teachings of Zen Buddhism. In this vast area, the author identifies and examines the primary aspect - the characteristics and patterns of the work of consciousness in the course of religious practice. It is clear that only a general approach is indicated here, the main principles are highlighted, on the basis of which a conscientious, aspiring reader is able to follow and understand for himself, perhaps the most important thing that is not included in the textual content of the book. And this understanding, of course, can significantly help in his own spiritual advancement, especially in the absence of a teacher. It is characteristic that the Japanese word “Zen” is included in the title, and the book is entirely written on Chinese material. The first name is better known to Western readers. The author shows that both are essentially varieties of Buddhism, if it is appropriate to put it that way. Buddhism is, first of all, a special way of seeing and approaching reality, and the ritual and philosophical content is secondary and varies depending on specific national and cultural characteristics. The formation of such a view and the structure of life will be facilitated primarily not by physical or breathing exercises, but a clear understanding and understanding of how the mind works during practice. This question, as applied to the “Teaching of Sudden Enlightenment,” is the subject of the Zen Master’s book.
