The diary of Samuel Pepys (1633–1703), a major statesman, a contemporary of the English Revolution of the 17th century, the Restoration, an eyewitness to the execution of Charles I, the London fire and the plague epidemic, remained in the history of world literature no less significant than the memoirs of Casanova. Pepys talks lively, temperamentally, frankly and with great spontaneity about political events and theatrical premieres, about his service in the Admiralty and about his relationship with his wife. Many of Pepys's remarks - about government officials, about politics and power, morality and religion - still sound extremely relevant today.
