The mercenary company goes around the world. From where - no matter where - God knows, the captain guesses, but the privates don’t care. They served in the Thirty Years' War, earned nothing, and now they take on any job. With whom they fight, and whoever comes across on the way, they fight. They would like to live a day... and remain human, which is sometimes very, very difficult. For the night is dark and full of horrors, and before the dawn it is darkest.

Review of the writer Natalya Boldyreva: Quote: “Wolf Road” can easily be considered one of the best examples of dark fantasy, although the author is not as harsh towards his heroes as Martin , and not so epic, but I’m sure many will remember “The Black Squad” by Glen Cook. “Wolf Road” is a story about the adventures of one company under the command of Captain Jacob Leslie. And these adventures begin on the day of graduation the Thirty Years' War - a war that many, not without reason, consider to be the first world war in human history. Not the most ordinary setting. The author very strictly adheres to historical realities, and at the beginning you read the novel simply for the detailed and clearly lovingly depicted atmosphere of that era. However, already in the first chapters the author generously scatters hints of twisting intrigues. The plot of the novel is not straightforward, it is somewhat more complex and intricate. There is no hero here obsessed with a certain goal; rather, as befits a novel of the era, there are people caught up in a whirlwind of circumstances. The world that suddenly fell on their heads after thirty years of incessant war, and all the accompanying difficulties. Because the long-awaited peace initially brings more problems and troubles than joys. Winter close, as they like to repeat in one famous saga, the region is ruined, the treasury is empty, and the troops are left idle. At the same time, this is a novel of formation and growing up. The author closely follows the development of two equal characters, male and female, each of which is completely independent and interesting in its own way. This is Reinecke the cadet, nicknamed “Not the Fox,” a descendant of the crusaders, the last scion of a ruined family, who hoped to gain military glory and an officer’s salary, and his beloved Anna, a simple village girl with a very difficult fate. Having collided almost on the first pages, the heroes walk towards each other for a long time, becoming stronger and older along the way, and, of course, we are talking not about the days lived, but about the experience gained. Watching the development of these characters is a special pleasure, although There is no intrigue in the ending of this story. Everything is clear here from the very beginning. The mechanisms of the main plot spring are hidden from a superficial glance, as is often the case in real life when it comes to wars and big politics. However, as it should be, it unwinds gradually, advancing Jacob Leslie’s company, and with it the entire novel, to one castle hidden deep in the thicket, where all the problems posed at the beginning will be resolved at once. Compositionally, the book is structured in such a way that it will not allow the reader to get bored even for a minute. Tense and tragic moments alternate with beautiful descriptions, historical excursions and amusing curiosities, presented with good irony. By the way, the language of the novel is worth noting separately. Despite some roughness in the text, which I am sure will go away after editing, it remains juicy and imaginative. It is clear that the author has a detailed understanding of the era being described, the characters, and the places in which the events unfold. The picture is drawn clear and precise, the dark tones are set off with precise bright strokes. And, of course, in addition to the captain, the cadet and his beloved, there are many other characters in the book, drawn in no less detail and adding color to the overall picture. What is even the stern and taciturn shooter Hans Flyberg worth with his musket, biblical quotes and personal tragedy about which he prefers to remain silent? Sergeant Mueller, always calculating something? Or Ensign Lorenzo, famous for his adventures? There are many characters in the novel, and each one is individual, behind each one one can feel a carefully thought-out background, which makes the novel only become more lively and voluminous. It feels that these people lived before the reader opened the book, and will live after. “Wolf Road” is a unique thing in these times, and I will follow the author’s new stories with interest.
