“The smartest head in Russia...” - this statement by the French diplomat Campredon, who knew P. A. Tolstoy closely, is true. This is confirmed by referring to the book that appeared as a result of Tolstoy’s first trip to Europe. By reading the text of the travel notes of the Moscow steward, analyzing the facts of Tolstoy’s biography, evidence from documentary sources of the late 17th - first third of the 18th centuries, it is possible to recreate the intellectual and moral image of this man, who left a noticeable mark on Russian history and literature.
