Varn – that’s the name of one of the baby mammoths – is not afraid of anything except the omnipresent “hundreds of eyes”, which “has no less legs” (he confidentially tells his girlfriend Pini). At the very beginning of the hike, Pini loses her mother and is bored all the time. She completely loses heart, and the wise Aunt Cora (matriarch) decides to leave the herd for the sake of little Pini and go separately. Pini is threatened with death from the teeth of a lion, but the good-natured mammoth Dark appears in time. Although this is against the rules, he decides to help the old female bring Pini to the Great Path.
