The book, for the first time in Russian historiography, examines the complete history of all Roman-German wars on the Rhine and Upper Danube border for the period from the 2nd century. BC e. to the 2nd century n. e. The participation of the Rhine Army of Rome in civil wars and coups is described, the stages and process of creating the Rhine Army of the Roman Empire and the grouping of troops in the province of Raetia are revealed, the long and gradual process of creating the Rhine-Rhaetian Limes as a system of border fortifications on which the Roman military groups were based protecting Gaul and the Alpine regions. The motivations and cause-and-effect relationships of the events that took place on the Rhine-Danube border of the Empire and in the border provinces are explained. The description of the events of military-political history is based on literary historical sources and on the most accurate analysis to date of the composition, deployment and movements of the empire’s troops on the Rhine-Danube Limes, based on the latest data from archaeology, epigraphy and papyrology. Prosopographic data is also used, which is important for assessing the principles of personnel policy of the Empire.
