This publication includes the most significant artistic and memoir works of Sergei Timofeevich Aksakov (1791-1859). In general, these essays seem to constitute the story of the writer’s life. This determines the order in which they follow one after another.S.T. Aksakov worked on “Family Chronicle” with long breaks for fifteen years. The writer faced not only censorship barriers, but also obstacles posed by his own family: relatives objected to the publication of the most acute, incriminating passages, which, in their opinion, could cast a shadow on the entire family. The publication of the “Family Chronicle” became event in Russian literature. The success of this book was extraordinary and far surpassed the success of Aksakov's two previous works. “Aksakov’s Chronicle,” wrote Herzen, “helps us somehow recognize our unknown past.” The texts are reproduced according to modern standards of spelling and punctuation, preserving the individual characteristics of the author’s style. All footnotes, except translations of foreign words, belong to the author.
