The work of Anthony Powell (1905–2000), a classic of English literature of the 20th century, the author of several dozen books, remains almost unknown in Russia. The novel “Twilight People” (1931), published for the first time in Russian, will allow readers to fill this gap to some extent. The novel (original title “Afternoon men”), with truly British humor, tells about the romantic adventures of William Atwater, his friends and acquaintances in London in the late 1920s. As in most of Powell's books, The Twilight People shows the life of London society in the details of the individual behavior of its representatives, both in social situations (parties or weekends), at work or simply alone with themselves against the backdrop of the influence of the rapidly gaining popularity of cinema .
