The novel reveals historical events in England at the beginning of the 18th century. Queen Anne is on the throne. There is a fierce rivalry between England and Spain. The main characters of the novel, Carlotta and Damaris, find themselves in a whirlpool of court intrigue. Carlotta's fate is such that she has to flee to France, where mysterious poisoners destroy Carlotta and her lover.
