Dostoevsky was in serious need of money, he was besieged by creditors, plus, Fyodor Mikhailovich, possessed by a morbid passion, was losing his last pennies at roulette. Loneliness and melancholy, more frequent attacks of epilepsy - all together pushed Dostoevsky to sign enslaving contracts with publishers, so two novels were sold for next to nothing: “The Gambler” and “Crime and Punishment”... Anna Snitkina entered Dostoevsky’s life like an angel. a keeper of the hearth, an indispensable assistant and a like-minded person.
