“Spring Snow” (1969) is the first book in the “Sea of Plenty” tetralogy, the main literary work of Yukio Mishima (1925–1970), a classic of Japanese literature of the 20th century. The basis of the plot of Yukio Mishima’s “Sea of Plenty” tetralogy is a story that actually embodies Buddhist concept of the cycle of human existence. The transmigration of the soul, the rebirth in a new bodily shell of a young man named Kiyoaki, who died at the age of twenty, is observed throughout his long life by his classmate and friend Honda. Kiyoaki has known Satoko since childhood, the daughter of the court aristocrat in whose family he was raised. Satoko loves him dearly, but Kiyoaki is cold as ice. And suddenly, when the matter of the marriage of Satoko, who should become the wife of the prince of the imperial blood, has already been decided, Kiyoaki realizes that he loves her. Their short-lived love ends in tragedy - Satoko's departure to a monastery and the death of Kiyoaki.
