“Charity,” according to Nicodemus the Holy Mountain, is “the surest path to the pinnacle of virtues,” “an instruction in the fight against passions,” and “a treasury of all spiritual benefits.” Its author, the venerable monk Paul from the Byzantine monastery of the Most Holy Theotokos: Evergetides (Benefactor), completed his work in 1054, selecting from the treasury: patristic wisdom accumulated from the first centuries of Christianity, all the most valuable things relating to the fight against sins and passions. He distributed the enormous material into two hundred topics in four volumes of fifty topics each. Each topic is dedicated to one particular sin or passion. It tells where they come from, gives means to combat them and achieve saving virtues. The materials are taken from the lives of the holy fathers and laity, presented in a lively, relaxed manner. These are stories, stories about phenomena and miracles, intimate conversations: a wise old man with his spiritual children. Since the sins and passions of monks and laity are the same, the means of combating them and achieving salvation are the same for them. That is why the book is spiritually useful for both monks and laity, in a word, for everyone who understands Christianity as a struggle and feat for the sake of salvation. Readers called this work after the author’s given name: “Evergetinos,” that is, the Benevolent. Therefore, we: leave the title in Russian “Blagolyubie” as understandable to the reader and in keeping with the spirit of the book. The book is being translated into Russian for the first time, although many of its fragments have been known for a long time in Russian and Slavic languages.
