Peter Greenaway is a British film director and screenwriter, author of fifty feature films and documentaries, one of the greatest masters of world cinema of the 20th century. Among his films, which were extremely successful all over the world, including in Russia, are “The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover”, “The Draftsman’s Contract”, “Countdown of the Drowned”, “Intimate Diary”, “Child of Macon” ".

The book “Gold” was conceived by the author as part of a large-scale art project centered around the film trilogy “The Suitcases of Tulse Luper.” This is a series of short stories about the origins of ninety-two gold bars, smelted from valuables that once belonged to victims of the Third Reich. The tragic stories of many characters seemed to come together: family heirlooms, wedding rings, dental crowns, precious coins and touching trinkets became identical gold bars collected in one suitcase. And all of them are united by a purely Greenaway plot about a man who must first miraculously acquire, and then, by chance, lose a mysterious treasure.
